Last February 11, 2010 the OpenOffice.org release their latest version of openoffice 3.2.0 with a lot of new features and improvement to their product. I’ve just download last night their latest version and trying it.

here are some improvement :

Faster Start-up times

- Compare to the lower version when you open it.. the start-up times load slow while the last openoffice 3.2.0 it load faster reduced ‘cold start’ time by 46% since version 3.0 was released just over a year ago.

ODF Support

-OpenOffice.org 3.2 has made further strides in compliance with ODF 1.2, including closer conformance to OASIS ODFF/OpenFormula specifications.

As OpenOffice.org 3.2 currently requires a superset of the ODF 1.2 specification, the software now warns users when ODF 1.2 Extended features have been used.

The document integrity check now proves whether an ODF document conforms to the ODF specification (this mainly affects ODF 1.2 documents). If an inconsistency is found, the document is treated as a broken one, and OpenOffice.org offers to repair the document.

Proprietary File Support

- Password protected Microsoft Office XML files (supported document types: MS Word 2007 documents (*.docx, *.docm); MS Word 2007 templates (*.dotx, *.dotm); MS Excel 2007 documents (*.xlsx, *.xlsm); MS Excel 2007 binary documents (*.xlsb); MS Excel 2007 templates (*.xltx, *.xltm); MS Powerpoint 2007 documents (*.pptx, *.pptm); MS Powerpoint 2007 templates (*.potx, *.potm)).

- OLE objects, form controls and pivot tables can now be read from MS Excel 2007 documents (*.xlsx, *.xlsb).

-Encryption support within the Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP filter allows password protected Microsoft Word documents to be saved (using the Microsoft Office standard RC4 algorithm).

-Filters for AportisDoc and PocketWord now support type detection based on DocType. As a result, files in these formats can be loaded without explicitly selecting the document type in the file picker.

-When writing string data to SYLK files, embedded double quotes are no longer escaped by doubling; semicolons are now escaped by doubling. This improves compatibility with files created by other applications

Support for Postscript based Opentype font

-There are many high quality commercial and free OpenType fonts that are based on Postscript outlines. They are now supported for formatting, printing, PDF-export and display.

OpenOffice 3.2.0 Feature: http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.2/

Download OpenOffice 3.2.0: http://download.openoffice.org/

What is the Global Jam?

The Ubuntu Global Jam is an online and in person event that takes place all across the world. People get together with the interest of making Ubuntu better, while having a good time socializing with other people near you who have the same interest and passion about Ubuntu as you do.

What can your LoCo do?

The Ubuntu Global Jam has many different events that for users to participate in, just pick what you and your members like, and make it happen. You can pick from one or more of the following events:

Bug Jam – During a bug jam users would work on finding, triaging and fixing bugs.
Testing Jam – Lucid is due out the end of April and we need help testing it out prior to its release.
Upgrade Jam – Upgrade systems that are currently running older versions of Ubuntu and report your experience.
Documentation Jam – Write documentation about using Ubuntu, or joining the Ubuntu community, or work on making the existing documentation better.
Translations Jam – Help to make Ubuntu available to everyone. Help translate Ubuntu into your language.
Packaging Jam – Help out with improving packages in Ubuntu.
Other – If your team has some other aspect of helping out the Ubuntu Community, feel free to participate in that for the Global Jam.

You can find out more information about the different types of Jams on the Ubuntu Global Jams wiki page [1].

How do we run a Jam?

If you have never run a Global Jam event before, or if you have, but would like some fresh ideas, we have three training sessions scheduled between now and the Global Jam event. The training sessions will be held by JorgeCastro and will be held in #ubuntu-locoteams on freenode. The training sessions will take place on:

17 February 2010 at 18:00 UTC
26 February 2010 at 2100 UTC
10 March 2010 at 2100 UTC

All three training sessions will contain tips, tricks, pointers and advice on how to run a Jam. You can also find out more information at the Running An Event page [2] on the Ubuntu Wiki.

What is needed to run a Jam?

In order to effectively run a Jam, each event will need a place to meet that has a decent internet connection, as well as some computers, and an area that users can work in. Suggested places are Universities, schools, and neighborhood centers.

Don’t forget after you find a place to run your Jam and have decided what your LoCo wants to do during the Jam, you need to get the word out about your Jam! Blog about it, post it on Twitter and Identi.ca, place it on the Ubuntu Global Jam Events page [2], send emails to your LoCo’s mailing lists, and anything else that you can think of. The more people that participate, the more fun that you will have, and the more help that can be provided to improve Ubuntu.

Need more help?

Read about what other LoCo’s have done at their Global Jam events for more thoughts and ideas [3] and if you are still in need of more help, or have questions that aren’t covered anywhere, feel free to contact myself via email or on IRC, or attend one of the training sessions listed above.

It’s been 3 days reviewing openbravo flow including it’s function. If you are new to openbravo you will be having a hard time configuring it out which will suite to your company needs. I list some two(2) important things that you have to keep in mind to be able to setup openbravo correctly.

Understanding Roles on OpenBravo

Roles are a way of grouping users together according to what parts of the system they are allowed to work with. You could set up a Role for use by the sales organisation that allowed access only to the Sales Management module and relevant reports. Whenever a new member of the sales team joined the organisation you could then allocated that role to them without having to configure each new user individually.

A user can have more than one Role, but each user can only log in under one role at any one time. For example, if a user has a Sales role and a Purchasing role, they could not log in under both roles at the same time. When you log into Openbravo ERP for the first time, the systems administrator role is already set up to enable you to configure the system.

You can change user by clicking on the top left user icon.

Setting up a client A.K.A. Company

The first stage in setting up basic data is to create a client. The Initial Client Setup process helps you complete all the steps in the correct order. When you set up a client you must specify which accounting schema the system will use. In this step you will need an accounting file depends on your country.

Download the accounting file for your country and save it to a location on the computer where Openbravo ERP is installed.

Log into Openbravo ERP under the System Administrator role.

From the menu, select General Setup > Client > Initial Client Setup. The Initial Client Setup window appears.

In the Client field, type your client name. This is usually the name of your company.

In the Organization field, type the name of one of your company’s organizations, for example “MyCompany Paris” or “MyCompany Sales”. You can add other organizations later.

From the Currency menu, select your company’s local currency.

In the Client Username specify a user name for the Client Admin account.

In the Organization Username field specify a user name for the Organization Admin account.

From the Country drop-down list, select the country where the client is located.

In the City field type the city where the client is located.

In the Accounting Dimensions section, click Browse…. The File Upload box appears.

In the File Upload box, navigate to the accounts file you downloaded in step 1.

Click OK to close the File Upload box and return to Openbravo ERP.

When you are happy with the information you have entered, click OK to create the client.

When the process is complete a confirmation message appears, listing the database tables that have been created.

Select the Information tab.

If you plan to use the Warehouse module, clear the Allow Negative Stock checkbox. If you plan to use the Warehouse module, select Allow Negative Stock.

Click Save.

If you are a FOSS advocate, an enthusiast or end-user, a developer or even a newbie who strongly believes in building capacities and empowering humanity with the use of Free/Open Source Software, we look forward to welcome you to Asia Source 3 to connect, cooperate, and collaborate – the FOSS way.

The International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3 with support from InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany, and Open Society Institute Information Program and co-organized by Tactical Technology Collective and Aspiration bring ASIA SOURCE 3 to the Philippines on 7 to 12 November 2009.

The third event of the Asia source camp series, two of which have been held so far – in Bangalore, India in 2005 and Sukabumi, Indonesia in 2007 – the 6-day learn-and-share event will be held at the lush greens and quiet cool environs of the YEN CENTER – home to the Headquarters and Regional Center for Asia of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) – located in Silang, a landlocked municipality south of Metro Manila, within the historic Province of Cavite.

In the tradition of previous camps, Asia Source 3 will bring in participants from the Asia, who share common goals of pursuing the Free/Open Source Software advocacy and its promotion and use among non-profit organizations, small-to-medium enterprises and youth networks.

Asia Source 3 allows applicants to choose one among four (4) FOSS-themed track sessions:

Track ONE: Managing Your Information

- As technology continues to pervade human activity, digital information will accumulate at a phenomenal rate. As megabytes turn to terabytes and into petabytes, managing content will become a challenge. This track aims to focus on different approaches to organizing information using free and/or open source software.

Track TWO: Migrating to FOSS

- Free and/or open source software are easy to install and fun to use! But how do you get your colleagues, friends, and organization to experience the same? Track two participants will share best practice and lessons learned in initiating and maintaining a FOSS culture within their organizations.

Track THREE: Broadcasting Your Information

- Now that you have all your files neatly organized and under control, you need to share these to the world and let others benefit from your own resources. FOSS content management systems, knowledge management tools, social networks, and mobile technologies make sharing easy and affordable. If you want to maximize your reach on the Net, this track is for you.

Track FOUR: Joining the FOSS Community / Using FOSS Tools

- FOSS is all about community. AS3 aims to bring seasoned FOSS developers into the camp and allow cross-pollination of ideas and techniques. Case studies will be shared from at least three projects. The track will focus on tools, organization and strategies for community building. The track will provide participants with an actual in depth working of successful FOSS projects, that may allow them to participate or setup their own.

DATES: This is a six-day long workshop, to be held in Silang, Philippines from the 7th to the 12th of November 2009. If you would like to participate, you will need to attend the entire event, which means arriving in Manila on or before the 6th and leaving on or after the 13th of November 2009.

FEES AND SUBSIDIES: Participants will arrange for and fund their own travel to Manila. Once there, transport to the venue from the airport in Manila will be provided. A participation fee will be required to cover meals and accommodation during the meeting. However, subsidies are available for qualified participants. In case you are unable to cover your travel or participation costs, please indicate in the application form below.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This is an event for experienced professionals and individuals actively working with marginalised communities and small-to-medium enterprises in Asia, with experience in information and communications technology (ICT). Camp participants will be advocates, technologists, software developers, designers and strategists who have used OR PLAN TO USE free and/or open source software (FOSS) in their line of work. They need not be experts but need to have a proven aptitude in the use of technology tools and have basic computing skills.

We are interested in a range of skills and expertise, be it in advocacy, software development, design and technology. We are particularly interested in applications from a wide range of individuals coming from non-government organizations working with marginalised sectors to small-to-medium enterprises involved in the use of ICT.

ELIGIBILITY:

I’ve just received this email..

________________________
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Cross-posting encouraged:

Education is being challenged to change with the times. Lately, we hear
words like “transparency,” “community,” “teamwork,” “project-based,” and
“networked” in the same context as we used to hear, simply, reading, writing
and math(s). Project-based, teamwork led by students themselves has come to
the fore. This is the kind of learning, we are told, that enables students
to develop the social learning skills and intellectual flexibility that is
needed in this brave new world.

Such learning requires a different kind of software, a different kind of
text as well as a different classroom-process than we used to use.

While some struggle to create new Web2 technologies that enable the kind of
learning and teaching deemed necessary, many have noticed that Free and Open
Software (LAMP.org) and Content (e.g. Wikipedia.org) already embody the very
lessons we are trying to teach. After all, they are made by teams via the
Internet with flexible leadership positions gained by proven capabilities
and dedication. Respect in these groups is based on skill, accomplishment
and social-networking effectiveness.

What’s more, the tools and artefacts produced by these groups are open to
scrutiny, dissection, and adaptation and exist at the pleasure of those
interested. They encourage curiosity, creativity and sharing: they embody
what schools’ mission statements say is important: lifelong learning,
curiosity, respect across borders, etc.

In the day-to-day work of schools, teachers, students and school
administrators look for “soulutions” to various problems in the Office, the
library, the classroom or at home: a text, a puzzle, a tool for reporting,
creating or analyzing; something else for organizing, sending and printing;
another for storing, searching and dissecting. There are now Free/Open
Source (FLOSS) tools for almost anything that can be done on a computer.
This is no surprize given that they are generally created to fulfill
specific needs or, as Eric Raymond observed, “to scratch an itch.”

We know that system admins have long used FLOSS; programmers too; now, more
and more teachers are using FLOSS. FlOSS itself is a product of
idea-sharing; so we would like to extend the FLOSS development process with
a technology-assisted physical gathering designed for sharing ideas,
problems and Solutions which are being used now or planned for the near
future in your schools.

Your ideas are welcome.

To the idealist:

What does Freedom and Openness mean for education? Is your “practice” as a
teacher or administrator or student being challenged to be more “open” in
some way than before? Does Free and/or Open Source Software (a.k.a. FLOSS)
and Free and Open Content (e.g. wikipedia.org) play a part? Should it? Can
it?

Propose a Session: Show, Tell and/or Teach us how you think/have experience
using FLOSS can help you and colleagues meet students needs more effectively
than with closed, proprietary solutions.

To the pragmatist:

Are you saving money while staying legal as a result of using free/open
tools or resources? What about security? Viruses and Hacking under control
as a result of free/open strategies? Do you find that the tools you need are
less stress-producing than the alternatives?

Propose a Session: Show, Tell and/or Teach us how you saved money (or plan
to do so), increased security, stability and/or power and ease of use with
FLOSS.
